Different denture labelling systems - A review

Introduction: Forensic odontology is the branch which helps in identification of a person on the basis of teeth and oral tissues. It may be with the help of rugae pattern , bite marks or labelling on restorations and prosthesis. As Prosthodontist fabricate prosthesis, they play a vital role in forensic identification. Denture labelling is well recognised by forensic experts and various International Associations and organisations. Sansane and Dyal in 1995 reported 1st forensic dental identification for the first time in India. It is of beneficial use in old-age homes, people with certain diseases , natural calamities and for medico-legal purpose. Different methods have been advocated by various authors such as surface methods which include engraving, embossing, laser etching etc and inclusion methods which include lead foil, metallic band, photograph, memory card , microlabelling, lenticular card , radiofrequency identification tag etc. No method is considered to be superior over one another. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. This paper presentation throws a light on various methods of denture labelling.
Summary: Denture labelling has gained a lot of importance since few years although it is not a new concept. As many dentists lack knowledge and people are relunctant, there is a strong need for education and awareness.
Conclusion: Knowledge of denture labelling is quite useful in forensic field. It serves as an important tool in which Prosthodontist is considered to play a special role.
