Introduction: Maxillary intra oral defects create an oronasal communication resulting in impaired mastication and speech. An obturator is a prosthesis which closes such communication. Obturators can be open or close depending upon type of extension into defect site. Open obturator results in accumulation of saliva, food, mucosal secretions resulting in bad odour and additional weight. Such difficulty can be avoided by fabricating closed bulb obturator. Rehabilitation of a patient with maxillary defect, either congenital or acquired, is challenging because of compromised retention due to the weight of the prosthesis. Increased stability and retention achieved by adequate extension into the defect area is counteracted by the increased bulk of the prosthesis. However weight of the prosthesis can be decreased by fabricating the obturator with hollow bulb. Various processing techniques and materials like sugar, salt, ice etc. have been proposed for the fabrication of hollow bulb obturator. This article describes various materials and processing techniques used for fabrication of hollow bulb obturator.
Summary: Several materials and techniques are available in the literature for fabricating the hollow bulb obturator. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The main objective of Prosthodontist should be the restoration of mastication, speech, esthetics along with improved comfort of the patient.
Conclusion: The most common factor to be considered in fabricating obturator is its retention. Hollow bulb obturator provides comfort to the patient by decreasing weight of the prosthesis. Every effort is worth making if the goal of restoration of normal function can be achieved.
