Introduction: In view of the increased demand for fixed prosthesis and for people who cannot afford implants cantilever FPD should be explored as a treatment option. The cantilever fixed partial denture as a treatment option has limited indication in patients seeking replacement of missing teeth by fixed prosthesis. The condition is characterised by abutments at one end only for support and the biomechanics involved results in deleterious forces on the retainer connector and pontic.
Summary: Designing occlusion in cantilever prosthesis plays a key role in the success of these prostheses. Cantilever FPD is an alternative for the removable partial denture in distal extension cases and can be successfully used to replace any tooth in the maxillary and mandibular arch. Cantilever fixed prosthesis is one of the treatment options that is most feared by regular practitioners and at times most easily exploited by treating dentists.
Conclusion: A careful approach and understanding of the individual requirements will lead to a successful FPD in patients seeking cantilever prosthesis. Considering the aesthetic and functional requirements, the results from cantilever prosthesis can be rewarding for the patient as well as the prosthodontist.
