Introduction: There are contradicting evidences in literature regarding effectiveness of stabilization splint in management of TMD in comparison to other treatments.
Methodology: Total of 80 patients who were diagnosed with TMD according to DC/TMD and fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria were randomly allocated to two treatment groups using random number table. Inclusion criteria were (1)presence of pain or tenderness in TMJ or Muscles of mastication and (2) reduced mouth opening as measured by inter incisal distance plus vertical overlap of <40mm. Group A patients were treated by Stabilization splints which were constructed by adapting poly ethylene sheets of 2mm thickness to Maxillary casts and occlusal surface of splints modified with clear acrylic to incorporate uniform contact of all mandibular teeth in centric relation, Incisal guidance and canine guidance. Group B patients were treated by education for self care, reassurance and counselling alone. Measurement for pain by Visual analogue scale and Maximum mouth opening were done at baseline, at 1 week, at 2 weeks , at 1 month and at 3 months. Data were analyzed using wilcoxon test, mann-whitney U test, repeated measure ANOVA and independent t test.
Result: There was significant reduction in pain for Group A patients as compared to Group B patients. There was no significant difference in mouth opening improvement between two groups.
Conclusion: Within the limitation of study we can conclude that Stabilization splints are more effective in reducing TMD pain as compared to education for self care, reassurance and counselling.
